Job Overview:

The controller is primarily responsible for coordinating, organizing and actively overseeing the operation of the property level accounting department. They will manage cash flow, conduct necessary reporting and approval of several accounting functions.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the property accounting function to ensure information is processed and reported accurately and timely.
  • Lead and manage several aspects of accounting services and activities to accommodate guests and maximize revenue. Conduct daily pre-shift/monthly meetings and use an effective monitoring/inspection program of accounting and finance services.
  • Ensure the application of accounting principles and practices, company policy, procedures, and service standard in coordination with the Director of Finance and General Manager.
  • Prepare bank and Balance Sheet reconciliations.

  • Safeguard the property’s cash by ensuring house banks are accurately maintained and counted regularly. Ensure all cash deposits are properly reconciled, logged and deposited in the bank in accordance with the company’s policies.
  • Manage the property’s purchase order process ensuring expenses are properly submitted and approved prior to ordering. Manage declining checkbook in order to manage costs and provide support making purchase decisions.
  • Process all vendor invoices including coding to the general ledger, obtaining necessary approvals and entering data into the accounting software.
  • Assist GM, DOF and corporate office in annual budgeting process and monthly forecasting.
  • Identify and create monthly accrual entries for accounts payable, utilities, franchise fees and other routine expenses.
  • Review the monthly financial statements and provide information on variances and trends.
  • Create and review weekly labor management report and assist in interpreting data.
  • Manage Capital expenditure process based on prescribed policies and procedures.
  • Work with sales and catering to ensure that all required documentation is received to support tax exempt revenues. Actively research and resolve tax shortages identified by corporate office.
  • Maximize profitability by ensuring that the property is using company programs and managing vendor payments discounts and tax shortages.
  • Work with the Internal Audit function to correct any procedural deficiencies and ensure the property is scoring no less than 90% on internal audits.
  • Review current standards and introduce hotel-wide changes such as those affecting Accounting/Finance to ensure the hotels are in compliance.
  • Maintain and review computerized records for budgeting and forecasting department expenses and make decisions based on information to ensure maximum profitability.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Specific Job Knowledge and Skills:

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities and demonstrate that he/she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to obtain any government-required licenses or certificates.
  • Knowledge of accounting operations includes all aspects such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, server service fees, etc.
  • Must have knowledge of business law, federal, state, and local taxes, and Department of Labor regulations.
  • Must have knowledge of insurance, employee benefits, claims, and liability.
  • Above average mathematical skills to analyze large volume of complex financial information from many sources and credit reports, forecasts projections for Executive level committees. Basic understanding of complex computerized financial systems and the ability to use manual dexterity to operate all office equipment to meet deadlines, operate 10-key by touch, complete necessary reports, and understand information from the hotel, regional or corporate offices.
  • Ability to stand and move about in the accounting and other hotel areas/departments throughout the shift.
  • Ability to exercise judgment in evaluating situations and in making sound decisions.
  • Ability to lift or move boxes weighing up to 25lbs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business management, finance, accounting, or related major; 6+ years experience in finance and accounting for large, luxury property experience preferred.
  • Given that our guests visit our hotels from all regions of the world, additional language ability is preferred.
  • Experience with Kronos or UKG
